Get Out of Your Comfort Zone and Take Some Risks!

I get it — you’ve worked hard to get where you are. You’ve put your head down and plowed ahead to make a name for yourself, you’ve made all the right choices and avoided the big risks. But are you really where you want to be or are you settling for less because you’re comfortable?

While your initial reaction might be to say that yes, you are happy with things, take some time to really consider where you are and if this is where you dreamed you’d be at this point in your life. If not, could it be because you’ve been taught that failure isn’t an option? What if I told you that not only is failure an option, it’s an option you should pounce on?

  • Failure is not fatal. Failing can be frightening, especially if you’re used to avoiding it. Taking calculated risks is not only a smart way to get ahead, it’s the best method for overcoming your fear of failure. You never get better by outperforming yourself or other people who are far below your level, you get better when you lose, learn a lesson, then try again.

  • Be curious and embrace failure. If you want to go after a promotion, what’s the first thing you have to do? Put yourself in the running, right? Many people will never even take that step because it opens them up to failure. What does it really take to put yourself in the running? Curiosity. Be curious about what could be and soon enough you’ll see that your fears are stifling your potential.

  • Stop hiding your mistakes. I’m not perfect, the people in your life aren’t perfect, and you’re not perfect. And that’s great! If we were perfect, there’d be no point in trying anything. Trying is the way that we grow, and letting our mistakes be as big a part of our life as our successes isn’t just important for our own wellbeing, it can even help other people succeed. Showing someone else that you didn’t just teleport to where you are can be the inspiration they need to take a risk, too. Maybe they’ll fail, maybe they won’t. What’s important is that you showed the world, and yourself, that failure is a stepping stone to success, because your story might be exactly what someone is looking for.
